Monument MPM1150 - Causeway, Oyster Island

Submerged causeway between Oyster Island, and a shingle bar extending westward from Baker's Island linking it to the mainland. The junction of the bar with the main part of the island is an area of significant archaeological deposits.

Submerged causeway between Oyster Island, and a shingle bar extending westward from Baker's Island, linking Baker's Island to the mainland. Both shingle bars, from Farlington Marshes to Oyster Island and from Baker's Island to the causeway, are set at right angles to the tidal flow of the water. As the flow is quite strong on a falling tide, this may suggest the shingle bars are not the result of a natural process. The bar between Farlington Marshes and Oyster Island has a significant 'dog-leg' where the flow has caused the bar to migrate southwards, indicating that it is unlikely to be naturally deposited shingle. The junction area of the shingle bar with the main part of Baker's Island is an area of significant archaeological deposits.
