Monument MPM1176 - Road Surface, Fratton Road

Gravel road surface and possible wheel rut to the south of Church Road observed during a watching brief in 2009. It's location suggests that Fratton Road was originally situated further east than its present position.

Gravel road surface to the south of Church Road, arching into Fratton Road, observed during a watching brief for a gas pipe trench in 2009. The gravel surface was 300mm thick, and was 250mm below the modern road surface. This earlier road surface showed where Church Road once met Fratton Road. It's location suggests that Church Road had extended further east, and that Fratton Road was originally located further east than its present position.

A second feature which formed part of the road may have been a wheel rut. This measured 700mm long and was 300mm deep with a rounded base. It was filled with a large of amount of slate in a greyish brown clay loam soil.
