Monument MPM1177 - Remains of Tenements, Fratton Road

A series of brick and limestone footings (walls) belonging to earlier tenements on Fratton Road were observed during a watching brief for a gas pipe trench in 2009. The footings ran at a different angle to the present day Fratton Road, suggesting the earlier road ran more northeast-southwest and was further east than its present positon. These buildings are not marked on Edwards map of 1716, which suggests that they are older than the vicarage on the west side of Fratton Road.

A total of six walls were recorded along the length of the trench. Five of these were made from bricks with no frogs, and one of large limestone blocks and flint nodules. One of the brick walls had a limestone footing, another was built on a chalk raft. Another of the brick walls was thicker than the others and may have been a chimney base.
