Monument MPM1180 - Bronze Age Gully and Undated Features, Former Recretation Ground, Hilsea

A mid-late Bronze Age gully and an undated pit and ditch revealed during an archaeological evaluation in 2011. Pottery sherds belonging to a Bronze Age vessel were recovered, together with burnt flint and animal bone.

A trench excavated during an archaeological evaulation in 2011 revealed a mid-late Bronze Age gully, and an undated pit and ditch. Pottery sherds belonging to a Bronze Age vessel were recovered, together with burnt flint and animal bone. Three further gullies, a linear feature and a medieval pit were also found during the evaluation. For details of these features see records MPM1181-MPM1183.

The gully had a U-shaped profile, and its single fill contained 15 sherds of mid-late Bronze Age pottery, 16 fragments of animal bone, a flint flake and fragments of burnt flint. The sherds belonged to a single section of a thick-walled vessel (15mm thick), which had shattered on lifting. The vessel had partly smoothed dark brown surfaces. The fabric was tempered with common medium-grade flint (0.2mm to 4mm) and was friable and soft.

The pit had a U-shaped profile, and was 0.62m wide and 0.09m deep. It had a single fill which contained burnt flint. The ditch, which measured 0.7m wide and was at least 0.128m deep, could not be fully investigated due to rising groundwater. Its upper fill contained burnt flint.
