Monument MPM1181 - Medieval pit and undated gully, Former Recretation Ground, Hilsea

A trench excavated during an archaeological evaluation in 2011 revealed a medieval pit and a gully of unknown date. Three further gullies and a linear feature were also found during the evaluation. For details of these features see records MPM1180, MPM1182 and MPM1183.

The pit measured 0.6m wide by 0.38m deep, and had a bowl-shaped profile. Its single fill contained one sherd of medieval pottery, 4 fragments of oyster shell, and fragments of burnt flint and a flint flake, the latter of which were assumed to be residual. The flake was dated to the Neolithic/Bronze Age. The gully, which had been cut by the pit, measured 0.3m wide and 0.07m deep and had a bowl-shaped profile. Its single fill contained fragments of burnt flint.
