Monument MPM1183 - Gully, Former Recretation Ground, Hilsea

A trench excavated during an archaeological evaluation in 2011 revealed a gully of unknown date. The gully, which ran the length of the trench, measured 0.5-0.8m wide and 0.15-0.35m deep, and had a bowl-shaped profile. Two slots (6 & 7) had been dug into the gully. The single fill of the gully and slot 7 contained burnt flint, and fragments of a cow mandible with an in-situ tooth. A single sherd of Bronze Age pottery was recovered from the subsoil immediately above the gully. This was from a thin-walled vessel (5mm thick), and was made from a hard fabric incorporating common rounded grains of quartz sand and sparse flint.
