Pit of possible prehistoric date recorded during an archaeological watching brief on groundworks to rear of the back garden of Winton House, Portsdown Hill Road, in 2011.

A pit of possible prehistoric date was recorded during an archaeological watching brief on groundworks to rear of the back garden of Winton House, Portsdown Hill Road, in 2011. The pit was 1.3m deep, at least 2m long and 1.5m wide with a rounded base. It contained two fills (6 & 7). The bottom fill (7) contained two fragments of burnt flint, possibly indicating a prehistoric date. A soil sample taken from fill 7 also contained some very small fragments of burnt flint, shell, marcasite fragments and very small intrusive fragments of coal and twigs. The more recent material in the sample had probably been introduced by root and worm action. The upper fill (6) was sealed by the subsoil and did not contain any finds.
