Monument MPM1196 - Tunnel, Grand Parade

Stone built tunnel found during re-paving works in 2010 within the footway east of 13 and 14 Grand Parade. It has also been suggested that the feature may have been part of a drainage system.

Stone built tunnel with brick repairs, found by members of COLAS while carrying out groundworks associated with re-paving in Grand Parade in 2010. The tunnel was located within the footway east of 13 and 14 Grand Parade, and was parallel with the front of the building. It was photographed and then backfilled and the paving relaid. No archaeological investigation/recording was carried out. It has been suggested that the tunnel found in 2010 and a second tunnel found during excavations immediately south-west of the Garrison Church in 1972 [MPM1721] may have been part of a drainage system.
