Monument MPM1207 - Well/Soakaway, 12 St Helens Parade

19th century circular brick-lined well recorded during an archaeological investigation in 2010, possibly associated with the former Lumps Windmill.

A circular 19th century brick-lined well (or well re-used as a soakaway) was recorded during an archaeological investigation at the site of 12 St Helens Parade in 2010. The well measured over 1m in diameter and had been backfilled with shingle. The bricks measured 230mm x 107mm x 65mm, and were unfrogged and unbonded. The well cut the natural clay, but had been truncated by the later excavation and backfilling of foundations.

It is possible the well was associated with Lumps Windmill which formerly stood on the site, and was modified for use as a soakaway when Lake House was built in the later 19th century. Lake House was demolished prior to an archaeological investigation taking place in 2010.
