Monument MPM1209 - Limestone walls, Star and Garter, Broad Street

Two adjoining limestone walls, probably belonging to the former late 17th/early 18th century Star and Garter public house, recorded during an archaeological evaluation in 2007.

Two adjoining limestone walls were recorded during an archaeological evaluation in 2007. One of the walls was on a north-south alignment and had ashlar construction on the western outer face. This section of wall was 0.5m thick and was exposed to a depth of 1.5m. An adjoining wall at the northern end of the trench was on an east-west alignment, and exposed the remaining top and inner face of the wall. Both of the walls were bonded with lime mortar.

The western part of the wall ran parellel to the footprint of the former late 17th/early 18th century Star and Garter Public House, as shown on the 1933 Ordnance Survey map, but was set back 3.4m. It is therefore probable that the remains represent the foundations of the western wall of this building, or part of it's cellar.
