Monument MPM1211 - Limestone Walls, Ship Worcester, Broad Street

Remains of two limestone walls probably belonging to the late 17th/early 18th century Ship Worcester public house. Recorded during an archaeological evaluation in 2007.

The remains of a limestone wall revealed during a watching brief in 2007. The wall (106) measured 2m in length by 1m in height and was 0.34m thick. It was made up of four lime mortar bonded courses, which had been faced on the western side. Infill or make-up layers butted the wall to the west, and it's northern end had been removed by modern building disturbance. A remnant of another limestone wall slightly to the west of 106 had been recorded during an earlier watching brief on the site.

The remains of both of the walls followed the alignment of the east and west walls of the late 17th/early 18th century Ship Worcester public house which formerly stood on the site, although they did not match the exact position of the walls exactly as shown on 19th century Ordnance Survey maps. The fact that wall 106 was faced suggests that it was an external wall, and this was possibly the eastern wall of the Ship Worcester.
