Monument MPM1240 - Pond/Marsh, Victoria Road North

Possible site of an earlier pond/marsh which had been levelled during the 18th century, revealed during archaeological excavations in 1982. Site name 'Fratton Bridge'.

A large area of made up ground which had been levelled was recorded during excavations in 1982. A thin spread of brown silt/soil 1-3cms deep was trapped beneath a fill of an average depth of 1m. This was thought to have represented evidence of a pond or marshy area, which may have caused the road to fork and form what is now Victoria Road North and Fawcett Road. The presence of 18th century pottery found within the fill suggested that it had been levelled sometime during this period.

The excavations took place in the rear gradens of the former 146-154 Victoria Road North, but the site is refered to as 'Fratton Bridge'.
