Monument MPM1247 - 19th century Plough Furrows, Abingdon Road

Mid-19th century plough furrows on a north-south alignment were revealed during an excavation in Abingdon Road in 1982. The furrows had retained their complete depth, and were effectively 'fossilised', having been sealed by later topsoil. The curl where the subsoil had followed the mould board of the plough or cultivator had been preserved, and it has been suggested that the furrows were cut by a steam-propelled apparatus during the mid-19th century. The area was developed for terraced housing c.1880-1890.
