Monument MPM1253 - Medieval Pits, Northumberland Road

Two pits were revealed during excavations in Area A of Northumberland Road in 1983. The fill of one pit (P3) contained three sherds of locally manufactured 13th century coarseware pottery, while the fill of the other (P5) contained two sherds. A scatter of 13th century coarseware pottery was revealed across the whole of the excavated area (see MPM1254). The pits and the scatter of pottery would indicate the presence of a nearby medieval settlement. As this would have been in the form of a small hamlet or farmstead, large quantities of finds would not be expected.
