Monument MPM1270 - Pits, Heathfield Road

Two pits and a narrow slot recorded during a watching brief in 2010.

The first pit (101) was approximately 1.40m wide and cut 0.60m deep into the natural brick-earth. It had been truncated by a drain belonging to a Victorian building. Its fill consisted of a dark grey silt with charcoal flecks approximately 0.40m thick, overlain by a dump of winkle shells, and capped by dark grey silt. The second pit (107) was 0.50m square, with a fill of dark grey silt which contained a fragment of clay pipe.

An indistinct narrow slot, measuring approximately 0.10m across, on a south-west to north-east alignment was recorded to the north-east of pit (101). It was filled with a dark grey silt.
