Find Spot MPM1283 - Medieval and Post-Medieval Pottery, 10 St James' Street

Four sherds of late medieval, and one sherd of post-medieval pottery recovered from deposits of made ground during a watching brief at 10 St James' Street Portsea in 2011. These deposits may have been used to build up the site following gravel extraction in the area.

The late medieval pottery comprised four sherds of 15th-16th century Sandy Ware. This was a hand fired orange sandy fabric with a mottled copper green glaze. Three of the sherds were from the same bowl, which had an internal glaze. Similar pottery was recovered from excavations at Oyster Street, Old Portsmouth 1968-1971.

The post-medieval pottery sherd was a rim from a Border Ware bowl dating to between 1550-1700. The bowl would have had notched rouletting around the shoulder. Only two other examples of this type of decoration having been used on Border Ware bowls are known, both of which are from London and have been dated to the mid-late 17th century.
