Monument MPM1288 - Former Parade Ground Governor's Green

The remains of a parade ground that was laid down following the demolition of the Governor's House in 1826, revealed during excavations on Governor's Green in 2009. Finds included a musket ball and a powder flask lid.

The remains of a parade ground laid down following the demolition of the Governor's House in 1826, were revealed below the topsoil of land to the south of the Royal Garrison Church during excavations on Governor's Green in 2009. The deposits and finds were recorded in Trench 3, one of four trenches excavated during investigations on the site.

The parade ground was formed of laminated deposits of gravel, laid upon two thick deposits of material which had come from the demolished Governor's House. The latter deposits contained 17th century pottery, brick and tile fragments, and a stray human finger bone. Finds recovered from the surface of the parade ground included a lead musket ball and a powder flask lid.
