Monument MPM1289 - Post-medieval demolition and levelling layers Governor's Green

Features and layers relating to the demolition and levelling of the site of the 16th century Governor's House in 1826. Recorded during excavations in 2009.

Evidence of the demolition of the 16th century Governor's House and levelling of the site in 1826 revealed during excavations on Governor's Green in 2009. The features and layers were recorded in Trench 4 during investigations on the site.

The demolition of the building was represented by a possible robber cut to remove a wall, which was subsequently in-filled and then covered by a thick levelling layer derived from material from the Governor's House, which contained brick and tile inclusions and stone rubble. The latter had been sealed by the surface of the parade ground which had been laid on top. A large rectangular cut, thought to have been associated with activity on the site during the Second World War, cut through the parade ground.
