Find Spot MPM1379 - Roman finds from Wymering

The edition of the Hampshire Telegraph for the 21st May 1926 recorded that the owner of a public tea garden on the south side of the main road through Wymering reported a number of finds in his grounds which were thought to be Roman. These comprised the foundation of a building under the lawn, large quantities of bricks (some glazed), fragments of tile and pottery, and a circular 2 1/2 lb leaden weight of Roman type. Midden debris including shells of oysters, whelks, periwinkles, mussels, cockles and snails was also discovered.

A very rough map showing the location of the discoveries, and illustrations of some of the finds, was included with the article. The illustrations and map record that some pottery was found in the cemetery on the east side of Cow Lane, and that some tile was found within the grounds of the manor (not recorded on the map).
