Find Spot MPM1385 - First World War Trench Art Shilling, Moneyfields Allotments

A George V trench art shilling found in topsoil at Moneyfields allotments in 2013. The reverse of the coin is engraved with illustrations of canon, a cross, flags and the words 'In Memory of CPL C.J. Hoad 1917'.

A George V shilling found in topsoil at Moneyfields allotments in 2013. The reverse of the coin has been scratched off so that the surface is smooth. Illustrations of two canon and a cross/soldiers grave bearing the letters 'R.I.P' have been engraved into the top half of the coin, with a crossed French and union flag in the lower half. In the centre of the coin are inscribed the words 'In Memory of CPL C.J. Hoad 1917'. The coin is thought to be a piece of First World War trench art and is now in the Portsmouth Museum Local History collection. As it was recovered from topsoil, it is possible the find originated from another area. It has not been possible to find any information relating to Corporal C.J. Hoad.
