Monument MPM1398 - 19th century walls, M275

The remains of two 19th century walls, believed to be the remains of cellars, recorded during a watching brief in 2010. The walls may have been related to the former Lodge at Mile End Cemetery.

The remains of two walls were recorded during a watching brief at the Trafalgar Gate Link road site in 2010. They were thought to belong to cellars of 19th century buildings, possibly the Lodge to Mile End Cemetery which formerly stood on the site.

A long wall (21) had been cut into a layer of buried topsoil approximately 0.40m thick, which probably dated to the 18th or 19th century. It measured approximately 0.60m high, and ran for a length of 13.40m on a north-north east by south-south west alignment. It was constructed in stretcher bond and had a series of recessed archways 0.90m wide facing west south-west. The bricks were unfrogged, standard sized with sharp arises in an orange sandy fabric, and probably dated to the 19th century. The wall had been broken by an area of disturbance which contained a modern concrete pit, but continued to the north, although it was only partially exposed in this area. A parallel wall revealed approximately 10m to the east, and constructed using the same materials, was thought to be part of the same structure.
