Monument MPM1399 - 19th century building foundations, Princess Royal Way

The remains of foundations belonging to 19th century buildings which were demolished during the 20th century, revealed during a watching brief in 2010.

Building foundations belonging to 19th century structures which had stood on the north side of the former Regent Street (demolished during the 20th century) were recorded during a watching brief for the Trafalgar Gate Link road in 2010. The remains comprised: 2 walls (3 & 4) constructed from unfrogged 19th century brick; 2 walls (5 & 13) constructed from brick with a shallow frog of mid-18th or 19th century date; a brick culvert (12) and an internal sleeper wall (10) made from unfrogged 19th century brick; an unmortared brick well (26) or cess pit in a former garden.

A dump of demolition rubble up to 0.50m thick between walls 3 and 5, was the result of the levelling of the buildings. Another demolition deposit approximately 0.50m thick was also observed between walls 5 and 10. The whole of the area was covered by a deposit of made ground approximately 0.40m thick.
