Monument MPM1542 - Concrete Raft, near King's Bastion, Pembroke Path

One of two concrete rafts revealed during a watching brief along Pembroke Path in 2010. Exact date and function not known, possibly a Second World War gun emplacement.

One of two concrete rafts revealed during a watching brief along Pembroke Path in 2010 (also see MPM1542). The raft had been laid over a layer of greyish brown silty loam containing abundant brick and building material. The date and function of this feature are not known, but it may be part of a Second World War defensive structure, possibly a concrete gun emplacement. Gun emplacements were constructed along the ramparts during the war, and the remains of some of these still survive.
