Monument MPM1553 - Former Medieval building, Oyster Street

The remains of a single-storey medieval timber building revealed during excavations at Oyster Street in 1968-71. Thought to be an outbuilding belonging to the same complex as a much larger building found on the same site (see MPM1552).

The remains of a late-13th century building (F3) revealed during excavations at Oyster Street in 1968-71. The building was found in the north-east of the site, and was thought to belong to the same complex as a much larger medieval building (see MPM1552), possibly acting as an outbuilding e.g. shed or store.

The building was a lightly-built single-storey square structure 8m x 8m, represented by post-holes and the remains of a rear doorway in the east wall. The latter consisted of a threshold of stones positioned between a pair of post-holes for the door-frame uprights. Shallow pits cut into the floor contained a few sherds of local coarseware pottery dating to the 13th-14th century.

During the 14th-15th century elements of this building were strengthened/replaced with the addition of larger stone-packed post-holes. [1, p46]
