Monument MPM1554 - Former Medieval garden, Oyster Street

14th-15th century garden revealed during excavations at Oyster Street in 1968-71. The soil contained a number of finds, including animal bone and late-medieval coarseware pottery.

Excavations in Oyster Street during 1968-71 revealed a 14th-15th century garden area, 10m x 13m, in the centre of the site. This was bounded to the north and west by the walls of a 13th century building (see MPM1552), and a cistern on its eastern side (see MPM1557). A post-hole alignment to the south of the garden probably represented the line of a fence. A large quantity of domestic rubbish was recovered from the garden soil, which was upto 30cm deep. This included animal bones and sherds of local late-medieval coarseware pottery. The garden was thought to have been in existence for a long period of time. [1, p46]
