Monument MPM1559 - Former 16th century building, Oyster Street

The remains of an 'L' shaped 16th century building (B5) were revealed during excavations in Oyster Street in 1968-71. The remains consisted of a trampled soil floor and the remnants of walls. The south wall was represented by a rough alignment of small stones and cobbles 8m long, the east by a narrow beam slot 4m long, and the west by a few stones on a north-south alignment. All that remained of the north wall was a line of yellow-brown clay. A central north-south wall was represented by a line of clay and scatter of small pebbles. A 2m square patch of pebbles lead to a doorway in the southwest corner of the building.
