Monument MPM1563 - Former 16th century latrine, Oyster Street

The remains of a 16th century latrine (F7) revealed during excavations in Oyster Street in 1968-71. The latrine was oval in shape and had been constructed in a shallow depression using limestone blocks for the walls which survived to a height of 60cm. The base was constructed from limestone slabs. It would have been flushed by tidal sea-water, and had a stone-lined channel which ran from the base of the latrine to a silted-up medieval dock to the west (see MPM1555). The latrine would only have been in use for a short period of time during the 16th century.
