Monument MPM1568 - Limestone revetments, Oyster Street

The remains of post-medieval limestone revetments, associated with an early stage of land reclamation on the Camber during the late-16th to early-17th century. The walls were used as the foundations for temporary 17th century buildings.

A series of early post-medieval rectangular limestone revetments were recorded during excavations in Oyster Street in 1968-71. The revetments/walls had been built out into the Camber, and were constructed on the site of a medieval dock which had silted-up during the early to mid-16th century (see MPM1555). They represented an early stage in the reclamation of this part of the Camber during the late-16th to early-17th century. The walls were used as the foundations for temporary buildings constructed on the site during the 17th century, which were subsequently reconstructed as more permanent buildings during the late-18th century.
