Monument MPM1573 - Former 18th century clay pipe kiln (PK3), Oyster Street

Early-18th century clay pipe kiln, revealed during excavations at Oyster Street in 1968-71. One of a group of three kilns found in the southwest of the site.

Clay pipe kiln (PK3), dating to the c. early-18th century revealed during excavations in Oyster Street in 1968-71. A total of four kilns were recorded during the excavations. This kiln belongs to a group of three found in the southwest of the site. A fourth kiln was located further to the north (MPM1571).

The kiln had been built alongside early-17th century walls, previously belonging to a land reclamation scheme (see MPM1568). The only surviving part of the structure was a red brick platform 1.5m x 60cm, constructed in an area 2.5m x 3m, which had originally been enclosed by a wall with stone foundations. Kiln waste and broken clay pipes dating to c. 1720 were recovered from a pit cut into the kiln site at a later date. The pipes bore the makers marks Richard Hoare, Robert Potell, I.C., W.S. (William Stretchley), I.S., and S.S.
