Monument MPM1584 - Former Portsea Island General Cemetery (Mile End Cemetery)

Site of Portsea Island General Cemetery (Mile End Cemetery), opened in 1831. The cemetery was closed in 1957 when it became a garden and the memorials removed. Some of the burials were exhumed when the site was redeveoped as the continental ferry port in the 1970s.

Site of Portsea Island General Cemetery (Mile End Cemetery). The cemetery was opened in 1831 by the Portsea Island General Cemetery Company. The company, an unincorporated association of private persons, had bought the land for use as a burial ground the same year. In 1957 the cemetery was conveyed to the Corporation and laid out as a garden in accordance with the provisions of the Open Spaces Act 1906, with a small area in one corner preserved as a burial ground. The last burial recorded in the cemetery registers took place in 1955. The site was later incorporated into the Continental Ferry Port in 1978. A number of burials were exhumed and reburied in Kingston Cemetery, but many still remain on the site.
