Monument MPM1607 - Former 18th century houses, Oyster Street

Site of three mid-18th century brick built houses, revealed during excavations in Oyster Street between 1968-1971. The houses were built of red brick and fronted onto the west side of Oyster Street at its junction with White Hart Lane. They all had fireplaces, internal walls and stairs. The houses were built over a complex of three levelled clay tobacco pipe kilns, and used earlier 17th century stone walls for the foundations. They probably replaced less permanent 17th century buildings which stood on the site when the clay pipe kilns were in use. [1, p65]

These buildings were either later converted into or replaced by The Royal Oak public house. [1, p78]
