Monument MPM1645 - Interdiction Battery, Portsdown Hill

The remains of an interdiction battery consisting of two concrete plinths for direction and range finding equipment and two guns housed in casements.

The remains of a Second World War Interdiction Battery on Portsdown Hill, designed to defend the areas of east Portsmouth, Langston Harbour, Hayling Island and Chichester Harbour from a land based invasion. The battery consisted of two concrete bearing and range finding plinths, one west of Fort Widley (SU653065) the other east of Fort Purbrook (SU680065), and two concrete casements to the west of Fort Purbrook housing guns and magazines. One of the gun casements (SU676064) was demolished in the 1990s, but the remains of the second casement (SU675064) and the two plinths are still in situ.
