Monument MPM1649 - Former GPO PR1 Protected Repeater Station

GPO PR1 Protected Repeater Station built in 1953. The station would have maintained essential war time communications in the event of a nuclear war by boosting the strength of the electrical telephone signal in order to counteract any damage to the wire. The site at Portsdown was one of eight Protected Repeater Stations built in the UK. The remaining sites were located at Birmingham (2 stations), Manchester (2 stations), Glasgow, Leeds and Bristol.

The Portsdown station survives as an empty shell, the interior having been ripped out and sold for scrap in March 2011.
