Monument MPM1660 - TRAM SHELTER

Early-20th century tram shelter, originally located in Southsea Terrace and relocated to Clarence Esplanade in 1999 where it was used as a bus shelter. The shelter was re-erected at it's current location in Queen Street in 2020.

Early 20th century tram shelter, now used as a bus shelter. The shelter was originally located in Southsea Terrace, later being moved to Clarence Esplanade in 1999 (outside the Blue Reef Aquarium). Following damage sustained during a road traffic incident the shelter was removed from Clarence Espanade in c2016 and re-erected in it's current location in Queen Street in 2020.

The shelter was built in the 1920's by David Rowell & Co., and the base of each column is inscribed 'D Rowell and Co, Howick Place, Westminster, London S.W'. The shelter is panelled iron and glass with cast-iron column supports. It is one of only two remaining tram shelters in Portsmouth, the second of which is located at Gunwharf Quays (see MPM1575).
