Building MPM1669 - Former Stable, South Wymering Farm

Former outbuilding to South Wymering Farm, probably a stable. Possibly early-19th century, with extensive 20th century reconstruction and additions.

Former outbuilding, probably a stable, to South Wymering Farm (see MPM647). An exact date of construction is not known, but it may be contemporary with South Wymering Farmhouse, which is thought to date to the early-19th century. The building was certainly in existence by 1870 when it was recorded on the Ordnance Survey map for this year. Originally a rectangular building on a north-south axis, only the north end of the earlier structure now survives. The south end was rebuilt, probably within the original footprint, during the 20th century, and extensions added to the south and east.

An historic building survey in 2007 revealed the original building had been constructed using flint panels with exposed flintwork, edged with handmade bricks. There would have been a double door at the north end of the west wall, facing the farmhouse, and possibly another double door at the other end of the wall. This was thought to suggest that the building is more likely to have been used as a stable, rather than a barn. When the south end was rebuilt during the 20th century, flint and brick were again used for its construction, but the walls were clad internally with concrete blocks. The rebuilding may relate to when the structure was converted into a furniture workshop. During the late-20th century an irregular shaped extension containing an office and toilet block was added to the south and east.

An application was made to convert the building into two dwellings in 2007.
