Monument MPM1683 - Site of Anchor Gate

Anchor Gate formed part of the post-medieval Portsea line of defences, which were demolished during the late-19th century. The footings of the gate were revealed during work to lay a gas main in the dockyard in 1980.

Site of the Anchor Gate, which formed part of the post-medieval Portsea line of defences protecting the town of Portsea and the dockyard. The gate was situated on the northern seaward wall between Fredericks Battery to the west and Sluice Battery to the east, and provided access to the shoreline. The defences were demolished during the 1870s.

The footings of the gate were revealed during work to lay a new gas main in the dockyard on the 15th September 1980.
