Monument MPM1691 - 19th century gullies, Southwick Hill Crossroads

19th century gullies, revealed during an archaeological excavation at Southwick Hill Crossroads in 1972. The gullies were thought to relate to the building of the Palmerston forts in the 1860s.

Shallow gullies, revealed during an archaeological excavation at Southwick Hill Crossroads in 1972. The gullies cut across the site in an east-west direction, and were thought to represent work carried out in the area when the Palmerston forts (Purbrook, Widley, Southwick, Nelson) were constructed during the 1860s. The site lies between Fort Widley and Fort Southwick. Metalwork recovered from the gullies also suggested a 19th century date.
