Monument MPM1697 - Former Kent Street Chapel and burial ground, Portsea

Site of the former Kent Street Baptist Chapel and burial ground. The original chapel was built in 1704, and was replaced with a larger building in 1847. The chapel burnt down in 1891, and was rebuilt only to be destroyed by Second World War bombing. [1]

The burial ground was situated around the chapel and had closed by 1850. [2] A list of burial grounds in a staff information folder at Portsmouth History Centre states that the burials were re-interred elsewhere when the site was re-developed in 1978.
