Monument MPM1701 - Tudor Well, Old Portsmouth

Well, probably Tudor in date, excavated in the cark park to the former Southern Electricity Generating Board in Gunwharf Road in 1967. The well was 12ft deep, and the fill did not contain any datable material. The wells construction of dry shingle with stone bonding courses, together with its close proximity to the Kings Storehouse, suggested an early Tudor date. It appeared to have been cleaned out and back filled, possibly during the 18th century when a brick dome had been constructed to seal the wells opening.

The location of the well has been estimated using the Ordnance Survey maps, as no plan was included with the correspondence file.
