Landscape MPM1712 - Garden, Gloucester Terrace

Small rectangular garden situated between Gloucester Terrace and Gloucester Place, Southsea. Originally a 19th century garden with a formal layout, shown on Ordnance Survey maps at least as early as 1860. Today the garden is populated by a variety of different species of trees.

A garden is shown on the Ordnance Survey maps in this location at least as early as 1860. It was presumably a public garden, as the land was not joined to any property, being positioned between the 19th century Gloucester Terrace on the north-west side and Gloucester House on the south-east side. Between 1860 and 1898 the garden has a formal layout with a circular feature in the centre, what appear to be semi-circular beds on either side, paths, and beds/borders around the edges. By 1910 there are no garden features shown, and by 1932 the maps only shows trees. Gloucester House had been replaced by terraced housing by 1898. The area around the garden was partly redeveloped after the Second World War.

Today the garden is overgrown and home to a variety of different species of trees. The garden is surrounded by iron railings, and is not open to the public. It is not known whether the railings are original or were added/replaced after the war.
