Monument MPM1736 - HMS Foudroyant Gun

Cannon belonging to the former training ship HMS Foudroyant situated on Kings Bastion. The cannon was presented to the City in 1974. The Foudroyant was a naval frigate launched in Bombay in 1817 and originally named HMS Trincomalee. The name was changed to TS Foudroyant when she became a training ship in 1903, and reverted back to HMS Trincomalee when she was restored after no longer being ceasing to be used for training in 1986. HMS Tincomalee is now part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and is moored in Hartlepool's historic docks.

An inscription on a plaque on the gun carriage reads:

'"24 POUNDER" GUN FROM THE ARMAMENT OF THE FRIGATE
HMS FOUDROYANT
PRESENTED TO THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH BY THE
FOUDROYANT TRUST 10TH JULY 1974 TO MARK THE
ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE TRAINING
SHIP HMS FOUDROYANT (EX TRINCOMALEE) AT THE
TIME STILL ACTIVE IN THE SERVICE OF YOUTH.

THE GUN CARRIAGE AND CANNON WERE SUBSEUENTLY
REFURBISHED BY MARINE ENGINEERING ARTIFICERS OF
HMS SULTAN DURING 1994/95
