Type and Period (1)
Full Description
Mortar (gun) mounted on a white platform to the South of the Garrison Church on Governor's Green. The mortar was originally located to the north-east of its current position, where it marked the site of the former Governor's House (demolished 1826). It was presented by the Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth Lord Frederick Fitzclarence in 1848. An original plaque was replaced when the mortar and platform were restored in 1889, and the monument surrounded by railings. The mortar was later moved to its present position and the railings removed. The plaque (now missing) read:
'On this site stood the old Government House of Portsmouth. It was here, on the visit of the Allied Sovereigns in 1814, that the Prince Regent, The Emperor of Russia, the King of Prussia, the Duke of Wellington, Marshal Blucher, and Count Platoff, Hetman of the Cossacks, surrounded by a host of Princes and warriors, came forward to the balcony and drank to the prosperity of the British people. This mortar and platform were here placed by Lieutenant-General Lord Frederick FitzClarence, G.C.H., Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth, 1848, and restored by Lieutenant-General Kent, late 77th Duke of Cambridge's Own Regiment, during the Lieutenant-Governorship of General Sir George Willis, K.C.B., &c., 1889.'
