Monument MPM1745 - Inspection chamber, Pitch House Jetty

A rectangular feature, thought to be an inspection chamber, was revealed during an archaeological watching brief in c. 1999. This feature, originally thought to be a well, had been constructed using dressed blocks of Portland stone. The hole around which the supporting stone structure had been built measured 0.84m x 0.86m, and it was over 15m deep. The water level rose and fell within the structure with the tide. It was thought that this feature may be related to a stone built culvert/tunnel also found on Pitch House Jetty(see MPM1742).
