Monument MPM1749 - Sea Wall, North Railway Jetty

Sections of sea wall exposed during a watching brief on the North Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard c. 1999. The wall had been constructed using dressed stone blocks.

Sections of sea wall were exposed during a watching brief on the North Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard in c. 1999.

A 30m section of the western sea wall was exposed. This had been constructed using dressed stone blocks and a rubble core and was 3m thick at its widest point. Some facing stones on the upper part of the wall had been replaced with concrete. A stepped footing measuring 0.28m x 2.5m was observed at the bottom of its southwest corner. The wall had been damaged by later services and a culvert built c. 1905.

A short section of the southern end of the sea wall was also observed. This had been constructed using dressed stone blocks on its north face. A stone buttress measuring 0.66m x 1.9m was situated 2m east of the southwest corner of the wall.

One course of dressed stone blocks belonging to the northern part of the current sea wall was exposed 3m below the modern ground surface. This section of sea wall had been added at a later date and was narrower, measuring c. 2m at its widest point.
