Monument MPM1750 - Foundation, North Railway Jetty

A foundation supported by rows of wooden piles was observed during an archaeological watching brief at the North Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard in c. 1999.

The foundation consisted of two rows of paired wooden piles running parallel to each other on an east-west alignment, each carrying a reinforced concrete foundation. The pairs of piles had been spaced 2.25m apart, with a gap of 0.75m between the two rows. The piles were 0.30m square and had been made from pine. The top of the concrete foundation was situated just below the modern ground surface. The building or structure this foundation related too could not be identified using historic maps or plans of the area. It has been suggested that it may have been used for a travelling crane.
