Monument MPM1751 - Limestone wall, North Railway Jetty
Summary

Type and Period (1)
Full Description
A 1.5m length of limestone wall running north-south was observed during a watching brief at the North Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard in c. 1999. The wall was roughly constructed and had been damage at its northern end by later services and the construction of an early-20th century culvert. The wall is marked on plans for a new Engine House and culvert dated 1905, but does not appear on earlier maps or plans of the area. It has been suggested that due to its rough construction the wall may relate to a very early dockyard structure, or represent part of the footings for a large building.
