Monument MPM1752 - Walls, North Railway Jetty

Two walls observed during a watching brief at the North Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard in c1999. The walls are thought to represent different phases of development within this area of the dockyard during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Two walls were observed during a watching brief at the North Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard in c1999. The walls are thought to represent different phases of development within this area of the dockyard during the 18th and 19th centuries.

A 2m section of wall was observed running east-west. At its western end it turned south-west for 1.67m. The wall had been constructed using large blocks of dressed stone 2m x 0.45m which faced its north side, and had a rubble core. This wall followed the lines of a jetty shown on a plan dating to 1750.

A second wall running north-south abutted the first. This had also been built using stone blocks, and was of a similar construction to sections of sea wall observed nearby (see MPM1749). The wall was 2m wide, but only a 0.50m section was exposed. This wall was later in date than the first, and may relate to alterations carried out in 1805 when the North Camber was enlarged.
