Monument MPM1776 - Stone Culvert

18th century stone drainage culvert observed on the north-east side of Dry Dock No. 3 during a watching brief in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2010.

An 18th century stone built drainage culvert was observed on the north east side of Dry Dock No. 3 during a watching brief in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2010. The culvert was at least 7m long and had been constructed using limestone slabs measuring 600mm x 300mm x 113mm thick, which spanned a stone and cobble lined channel. The walls had been crudely built using limestone and cobble, and were at least 0.30m high. The culvert was positioned at a 45° angle to the dock. The culvert would appear to pre-date the building of the dry dock as its southern end had been cut away, probably during the construction of a stone built timber chute which served the dock.
