Full Description

Remains of a capstan base on south side of Dry Dock No. 3 observed approximately 0.40m below ground level during a watching brief in 2010. Constructed using irregular rough dressed limestone blocks which measured 3.60m x 3.50m x 2.50m deep. A square recess in the centre of the base had been backfilled with stone and rubble. It had been truncated by 20th century basements and the upper surface removed by a modern service trench. The construction materials used were dated to 1800-1950. The base was removed during redevelopment of the site.
