Monument MPM1780 - Capstan base, north of Dry Dock No.3

A large stone built structure, interpreted as a mid-19th century capstan base, observed on the north side of Dry Dock No.3 during an archaeological watching brief in 2010.

A large stone built structure, interpreted as a mid-19th century capstan base, was observed on the north side of Dry Dock No.3 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard during an archaeological watching brief in 2010. The base was 0.18m below the ground surface and had been constructed using a top course of large dressed limestone blocks which had been laid on courses of smaller roughly hew limestone blocks. A circular concrete pillar with iron banding inserted in the upper stones may have been the centre spindle of the capstan.
